In 2004 the Index explored policies and legal provisions in 5 key areas or 'strands':
Civic Citizenship:
- Long-term residence
- Family re-union
- Naturalisation
as well as
- Labour market access
- Anti-discrimination
For the Index 2006, an additional strand has been developed on
